Baltimore Spotlights on Small Businesses Draw New Talent to Local Employers
Programs that highlight neighborhood retailers are increasing visibility for hiring needs across Federal Hill and nearby districts.
How we reported this

M&T Bank runs a rotating Spotlight Shop pop-up inside its Federal Hill branch that features minority- and women-owned retailers, paired with an online platform that promotes more than 170 small businesses across the bank’s footprint.
Programs that surface local retailers
The Small Business Spotlight YouTube series profiles Baltimore-area operators such as Pandora’s Box in Federal Hill and Nika’s Cupcake Bar, founded by Tanika Nelson and part of Cohort 1 of the Empower Baltimore program. The Baltimore Development Corporation’s Made in Baltimore initiative certifies and brands more than 300 local makers to improve their market reach.
These visibility efforts matter now because neighborhood retailers that gain attention through bank pop-ups and video profiles can reach wider customer bases, which in turn shapes demand for workers with retail, production and digital skills in the same districts.
Neighborhood anchors and hiring patterns
Pandora’s Box operates Thursday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM and accepts phone and online orders. The Spotlight, a new creative space for content creators, opened in early June 2026 at Towson Town Center. Mayor Brandon M. Scott’s annual Small Business Saturday tour stops at shops in Highlandtown, Federal Hill and Fell’s Point.
Businesses that receive this kind of consistent exposure often expand their operations and staffing needs, drawing applicants from the surrounding talent pool rather than relying solely on established hiring channels.
Owners can list openings on the M&T online platform that already showcases more than 170 businesses, contact the Baltimore Development Corporation for Made in Baltimore certification resources, or reach out to the Empower Baltimore program for cohort-style support that has previously included operators such as Nika’s Cupcake Bar.
